our beginnings...
Tee Yih Jia began as a labour intensive and semi mechanised spring roll factory
in 1969. In 1975, total annual turnover was only about S$300,000. Its profit
margin was far from encouraging and prospects for improvement were bleak since
its market was mainly domestic.
In 1977, the company was acquired by Mr Goi Seng Hui, an enterprising young
man. Under his strong visionary leadership, annual turnover increased four-fold
within 3years. By 1982, the manufacturing process was fully automated. Stringent
quality control was implemented and was eventually computerised to ensure consistent
high standards.
...expansion overseas...
Mr Goi had foreseen on the onset that the company would not be able to grow as fast as he intended whilst depending
solely on the domestic market as a base. Tee Yih Jia immediately began to aggressively market the pastry abroad
and soon began exporting to countries around the world. It also expanded its range of products to include Crepes,
Spring Rolls and Indian Samosas to cater to each market's specific requirements. Tee Yih Jia, once a domestic-based
company, now exports more than 90% of its production.
Today, Tee Yih Jia's seven-storey building in Singapore serves as the headquarters
and the manufacturing base. It has also expanded its pastry manufacturing facilities
to Malaysia and now has a 200,000 sq ft factory in Johor.
In 1986, in
recognition of Tee Yih Jia's technological improvements, its emphasis on research and development, stringent quality
control, aggressive marketing strategies and expansion plans, the National Productivity Council presented the National
Productivity Award to Tee Yih Jia. Its value added per worker was almost 2.5 times that of the industry average.
It was also the first recipient of the Enterprise Award which was jointly organised by The Business Times and DHL
International.
...milestone of growth...
1988 was a milestone for Tee Yih Jia. It acquired its first major overseas operation: an established food manufacturing
and distribution company in the United States. It has since expanded its US operations and now owns two manufacturing
plants in California which manufacture Japanese noodles, cookies and cultured milk drinks. Tee Yih Jia has also
invested and set up other manufacturing plants in Malaysia, China and Taiwan.
Tee Yih Jia's first investment in China was in Fuqing, Fujian. In 1988, in a joint-venture with the China Pacific
group, it invested and built an impressive two-storey factory to manufacture spring rolls, samosas and biscuits.
Tee Yih Jia further expanded its investment in China with the purchase of the
largest brewery in Fuzhou. It acquired full ownership of the Fuzhou-based brewery
in June 1993 and renamed the brewery as Tee Yih Jia (Fujian) Brewery Co Ltd.
Two months later, it formed a strategic alliance with the Asia Pacific Brewery
Ltd. Currently, the brewery produces beer under the "Rong Cheng" trade
make and is being upgraded to facilitate the production of international lager.
In 1990, Tee Yih Jia commissioned the statues of 8 Chinese legendary heroes for the Marina City Park's Sculpture
Garden, which cost about $1 million. It was a memorable occasion for Tee Yih Jia when the eight statues were officially
unveiled by the Honorable Prime Minister of Singapore - Mr Goh Chok Tong.
